Hanakotoba [ ハナコトバ ] is a slice-of-life series created by Bernice Ng for her Final Year Project (FYP) in LASALLE College of the Arts.
The intention of this FYP was to introduce a fresh and innovative take to the conventional anime and fashion collaboration. For maximum creative control, Bernice created her own pseudo anime series and simulated a collaboration with Japanese lifetsyle brand WEGO.
Hanakotoba depicts the story of two childhood friends, Ren and Ran. There is only one constant problem in Ren’s life: Ran. Ran, being the slightly older of the two, uses this fact to her advantage and pushes Ren around - years later, even after entering university, this remains an everyday constant.
A variety of media mediums were used to effectively simulate this collaboration. Bernice’s focused her efforts on creating publications, an Instagram account just for the simulation, and a website (now defunct).
A magazine was done up in WEGO’s house style. An additional artbook was also created to showcase additional photographs and illustrations that were not used in this magazine. Some of these photographs are showcased in a lookbook posted on the Hanakotoba website.
A page detailing the clothing featured and other merchandise was also set up on the website, so that customers who wish to buy these items can do so at a glance from the Hanakotoba website.
